The retailer has already added fresh visuals to the site, a process driven by Boyle’s wife Ciara Denvir, who has joined the team as creative director; something Boyle says has helped boost its digital appearance in the past 12 months.
Argento founder and chief executive Pete Boyle is flying the flag for retail evolution, with £1 million investment being placed in fresh retail locations and a fashion-forward concept for its estate of stores.
It leaves the firm founded by Strabane man Pete Boyle with a portfolio of 26 outlets, with most located here. He opened his first Argento store in 1998, aiming to sell quality, modern jewellery in a gallery-style setting. Is Argento planning to take on more brands with its increased square footage?

Of course, no retailer can be successful without making sales, and Boyle has recognised a clear development in what customers seek from his type of fashion-led, entry- to-mid-market level of jewellery retailing. Joe Peskett caught up with chief executive officer Peter Boyle to discover how a major store redesign, brand buying strategy and ecommerce site has presented the company with an opportunity to dominate the multibrand market in the UK.
“So, if we’re doing anything in the next 12 months, it’s focusing on Argento as paying for someone else’s traffic using their brand name means a short term gain but has no long term value [for the Argento name].”.
If there is one element of this new retail push Boyle is particularly keen to focus on, it is the development of the Argento name and personality. But the retailer acknowledges that an equally appealing and user-friendly ecommerce site is vitally important in this day and age.
Boyle explains that a fall in rents means that Argento has the opportunity to upgrade many of its existing stores, even those that are already trading well where they are. Peter Boyle's latest project is an aqua park in Belfast complete with its own man made beach and 14 acre lake. Boyle reveals what is both an exciting and frightening prospect: “In five years we’ll have to come up with another redesign of the store. The owners of award-winning jewellery retail chain, Argento, have seen their fortunes rise to £122m, earning them the spot in the iconic Rich List for the very first time. For Argento, moving with fashion trends has also impacted its online presence, and part of the £1 million investment will be spent on improving the Argento website in terms of its graphic design and functionality. The whole process took about three years, starting with conversations with various design consultancies all over the UK to find the right look. Joining the owners of Warren James and Boodles in the definitive guide of the UK’s richest 1,000 people, husband and wife duo, Peter Boyle and Ciara Denvir, were welcomed as a new entry. He explains: “We’re in an in between stage at the moment, a lot of independent wholesale companies have gone bust so a lot of shows are weaker and not as good to go to.” Boyle adds: “We’re not taking as many chances in terms of just buying something that has no track record. The goal was to stand out in a multibrand retail environment — no mean feat. It would appear then, that Argento’s potential for growth is significant, and considering it started out with a humble 100 square foot shop, it certainly has a track record of being able to translate ambition into cold hard cash. It is partly this selective choosing and a streamlined, attractive website that has meant Argento’s ecommerce side has become a central driver of the business’s overall profits. Our Pandora business is up about 6% and other products are doing well.” In 2016 Argento opened a flagship Pandora store in Belfast’s Commarket.
Blessed with an excellent eye, and natural entrepreneurial flare, the Strabane family man travelled the world sourcing the best jewellery, in South America, Asia and beyond.
Boyle remains coy in his reply, but he does suggest that the upgraded space will create more room for Argento’s current portfolio of designer jewellery brands, alongside its own silver and costume collections. “Brands’ expectations have gone up and they want more space,” he says. If you want a job done right, sometimes you have to do it yourself. The Argento boss appreciates that as a self-confessed fashion jewellery retailer he does not have his “hands tied to a set of rules like many traditional jewellers do”, but admits that being in partnership with multiple brands can be restrictive.
